The series RKD Monographs publishes the results of scholarly research on the oeuvre of an artist or on a specific art-historical subject. The subjects relate to Dutch art from the late Middle Ages to the present in an international context.

RKD Monographs is a dynamic form of publication: based on the data in the extensive databases of the RKD, it offers the possibility to add new information and to include new insights, as well as to link (digital) sources like archival documents, literature and audiovisual material.

In 2013 the RKD started Gerson Digital, an expansive, scientific documentation research project on the distribution of paintings and drawings from the Northern and Southern Netherlands from the Golden Age. The basis for this research is the influential yet dated overview work by Horst Gerson (1907-1978) Ausbreitung und Nachwirkung der Holländischen Malerei des 17. Jahrhunderts from 1942. The aim of the project is to put together a completely updated, scientific annotated and illustrated digital publication in English. The research is one of the core elements of the RKD research program.

X George Hendrik Breitner: the photographer

In this publication Hans Roosenboom discusses the artist George Breitner not as a painter but as a photographer. He argues why Breitner can be referred to as one of the first photographers who used the so called snapshot technique. Breitner used particular techniques, such as the contrast in intensity of light and dark, very conscious and not out of a lack of visual ability. Breitner was in this regard a leader in his field, his approach to photography did not become popular until the fifties.
